PBK Architects, Inc. and GENIVAR lay a golden egg in Kitchener Ontario

For the second time in as many months, one of our projects has turned to gold – LEED Gold, that is! The $16 million Activa Sportsplex was designed by PBK Architects, Inc. in Toronto, a subsidiary of GENIVAR well known for its expertise in recreational facility design. The mechanical, electrical and structural design services were provided by GENIVAR’s Burlington office. The collaboration of these two offices created the first LEED GOLD ice sports facility in Canada and, the largest LEED certified building in Kitchener.

This 110,000 sq.ft. facility is the home of the Waterloo Regional Boxing Academy and the Kitchener Minor Hockey Association. It is equipped with two NHL sized ice rinks, a 7,200 sq.ft. boxing training facility, a 4-lane indoor running track and administrative offices. Open since September 2008, the Activa Sportsplex contributes to the quality of life for the residents of Kitchener and the surrounding area by providing year-round access to recreational facilities and minimizing its carbon footprint on the environment.
