Port of Spain Transportation Plan and CBD Rehabilitation Awarded to GENIVAR

GENIVAR has been mandated to prepare a Master Plan for the greater Port of Spain Area. This Master Plan examined the following themes: • Traffic & Transportation; • Utilities, Sewers & Water; • Flood Control & Storm Sewers; • Urban Design, Planning & Landscaping. In order to undertake this analysis a review of existing data was conducted and additional counts and surveys were undertaken as needed. Once the needs were clearly understood wide-ranging transportation improvements were developed, including; construction of new highways and arterial roads, provision of a new downtown public transit circulator system and the integration of a planned rapid transit system. Apart from preparing the Master Plan the project also included preparing the plans and specifications for the rehabilitation of the CBD in conformance to the Master Plan. This included burial of all utilities, rehabilitation of underground pipes and utilities and the complete reconstruction of streets and sidewalks. Furthermore, this rehabilitation included the full streetscaping of the CBD with the inclusion of street furniture and landscaping. In order to conduct this work the entire CBD, its roadways, sidewalks, utilities and other services were surveyed in detail. This rehabilitation also led to the complete reorganisation of the one-way street network and the installation of an entirely new traffic control system and new on-street parking regulations.
